National Osteoporosis Awareness Month

Bone Densitometer scanning, also known as DEXA scanning, is used to measure bone mineral density. To detect bone fractures and osteoporosis, patients are likely to go through a bone density scan. This type of medical imaging equipment is known to help millions of people around the world, and their doctors, detect Osteoporosis. This year, the month of May is dedicated to Osteoporosis awareness.

Approximately half of all women and 1 in every 4 men over the age of 50 in the U.S will break a bone due to Osteoporosis and about 1 in every 3 adults over 65 in the U.S will also fall and increase their chances of a broken bone. To prevent this disease it is crucial to build healthy bones early in life. Keeping a healthy lifestyle and exercising regularly can help prevent osteoporosis.

Getting a bone density scan regularly can help detect fragile bones and keeping up positive habits can ensure bone health in the future. With routine density scans, patients can track bone mineral density (BMD) and this can help detect osteoporosis. When going to a bone density scan, you can expect to have small parts of the body like hands and arms examined, or bigger parts such as the spine and hip bone scanned. Bone densitometers are part of the standard modalities of medical imaging equipment and they don’t require complex scanning procedures. Adults can start early screening to keep track of their BMD. When getting a DEXA scan, you will not experience high-dose radiation exposure. It is a non-invasive procedure and the low dose X-Ray beams are not harmful to the body.
