November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

November is declared Lung Cancer Awareness Month; this observance is very important due to the high-risk factor involved. In the United States, about 80%-90% of lung cancer deaths are linked to cigarette smoking. This type of Cancer is the leading cause of death among the main types of Cancer. People who smoke cigarettes are 15 to 30 times more likely to get lung cancer than people who do not smoke. Smoking occasionally will also increase your risk of suffering from this disease.

Get Screened

It is crucial to get screened for lung cancer if you have the following:

  • A smoking history of about 15-20 packs a year.
  • If you have quit smoking in the last 15 years or if you currently smoke.
  • If you’re between the ages of 50-80 years old.
  • If you have been exposed to secondhand smoking

Secondhand Smoking

This type of indirect smoking can cause major issues in the development of children and young adults. It is important to be aware of this if you have a smoking history and usually expose others around you. Secondhand smoking is almost as deadly as smoking firsthand. Children’s bodies and organs are constantly in development; therefore, their lungs can be greatly affected by this. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to develop diseases like pneumonia, bronchitis, and ear infections. Babies are also more likely to die unexpectedly from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome if they are constantly exposed to smoking.

Diagnosis

Lung Cancer can be diagnosed in many different ways. Usually, a doctor will be able to detect any abnormalities in the lungs with a Low Dose CT Scan. This type of medical imaging equipment scans for lung tumors and lymph nodes that can contain cancer. An LDCT scanner is one of the few types of medical imaging equipment recommended for lung cancer screening due to the low amount of radiation emitted. A CT Scanner can also detect if cancer has spread beyond the lungs. A chest X-Ray can also help determine if there is Cancer in the lungs. Treatment for lung cancer includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapy. If you have a history of smoking or have been exposed to smoking even for a short period of time, it is highly recommended to get screened during the right period of time.
